Legislative Updates Bestiality In the Senate Florida Sen. Sen. Rich (D) has introducted Senate Bill S.0448 relating to "Sexual Activities Involving Animals." Issues involving animals are getting more attention these days, hopefully making life easier for the millions of animals who call the Sunshine State home. Amazingly, however, bestiality is not against the law in Florida (and 14 other states.) Sen. Rich's bill would make sex with animals punishable by up to five years in prison. She filed the bill October, 2009. It has been unanimously approved by three Senate committees and has one more committee stop before reaching the full Senate chamber for a vote. UPDATE: As of February 12, 2011, this bill has failed to pass - again. Bestiality is still legal in Florida, You can help change this - ask your lawmakers to back S.B. 344/H.B. 125. Find your House representatives and Senators and dash off a few emails UPDATE: As of February 1, 2010, this bill had passed 6-0 in the Criminal Justice committee and has made it to the Agriculture committee. What can you do? 1. Contact Sen. Nan Rich at rich.nan.web@flsenate.gov and state your support of SB 0448. 2. Check Congress.org for your state senator's contact info and write them, asking for their support of SB 0448. In the House In the House, Rep. Snyder has filed HB 273 (identical to SB 448.) The legislation must be passed by both the House and the Senate in order to become law. This bill was heard by the House Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee March, 2009, but on May 2, 2009, a CS was filed before final reading and the bill "died pending Review of CS under Rule 7.20." What can you do? 1. Contact Rep. William D. Snyder by using his email form on his website, state your support of SB 0448 and HB 273 and ask for the bills to not be forgotten.
