Where are the doggies dining in Florida?

Florida residents: Need help convincing your city or county to consider this issue? Check out Now What? for info, tips and a sample letter you can send to motivate your local politicians.

05-06-09 NEWS ALERT

The Florida Legislature has passed an amendemnt to the current doggie dining law (known in Tallahassee as the "DBPR/Dog Friendly Dining regulation") that removes the 2006 pilot project language and the sunset language and makes the doggie dining program permanent. The bill is now on its way to Gov. Charlie Crist's desk for his signature.

Once Gov. Crist signs it - and there's no reason to think he won't - we'll post a note here. At that time, please email your thanks to the sponsors of the bills, in both the House and the Senate. Be sure to specify the bill number to each, like this:

*** House Sponsor, Representative Scott Plakon. Contact: (850) 488-2231 or scott@scottplakon.com. Tell Rep. Scott, "Thank you for supporting HB 425 to make doggie dining permanent."

*** Senate Sponsor, Senator Mike Fasano: Contact: (727) 848- 5885 or fasano.mike.web@flsenate.gov. Tell Senator Fasana, "Thank you for supporting SB 682 to make doggie dining permanent."

Note: Veterinarian K.C. Nayfield, a constant advocate for the doggie dining idea, has been our point person for this issue in Crystal River and we are extremely appreciative for the updates. As a pet health expert, Dr. Nayfield says doggie dining does not pose a health threat like some would think. According to Dr. Nayfield, a restaurant patron is 1,000 times more likely to contract an illness from a food preparer, server or another diner than from a dog, because "most bacteria is unique to a species."

With that, here are a few area restaurants where you and your dog are welcome:

* Claw Daddy's Raw Bar & Grill, 1601 SE US Highway 19 Crystal River. 352-564-2529.

The ordinance has now been approved and the event will resume every Thursday in 2008 between 7-9 p.m. Well-behaved dogs, at least 6 months old and current on shots, can come with well-behaved humans and share some biscuits and water. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to PAWS.

Note to our readers

We'll try and keep up with the cities and counties that consider and approve or reject ordinances to allow restaurants to apply for permits allowing dogs to join their humans in the outdoor dining areas, but we'll need your help. If you know of a city or county that is in process of discussing or has already established a doggie dining ordinance, and we've not listed it here, please drop us an email.

Also, it's our intention to also list here restaurants across the state that allow doggie dining - eventually - as we read or hear about them. So if you know of a pet friendly eatery, please let us know so we can add it here.

And, as always, if you see any errors in the information here, please contact us immediately.
