Our little ones are naturally full of love. What better time than their early, impressionable years to teach them compassion and respect for all creatures, great and small. I am writing to ask that ______ (school system or church) consider formally adding these values and practical lessons to your curriculum.

Over the past three decades, researchers have noted an increased link between violence towards animals and violence towards people. Churches and schools are perfect training grounds to help squelch this disturbing trend. By teaching and practicing compassion and empathy towards children and animals, I feel ____ (school system or church) can help produce a more compassionate, less violent society.

It is hoped that most children are learning some of this compassion at home, but sometimes schools and/or churches are the ONLY source of such teachings. In our increasingly-violent society, a young generation capable of love for humans and animals will make a difference by eventually being ready to teach subsequent generations the compassion they learned early in their lives, from caring adults in their homes, schools and churches. Only then can we hope to break the cycle of violence toward humans and animals.
