St. George Island1. Dog-Friendly Beach Reader Notes: "There seems to be a rather new interest among Franklin County officials, to allow dogs on the beaches, hotels and even patios at local restaurants. I think they know it will bring them more business, hence, more dollars." "We’ve been taking our 4 legged children to SGI for 20 years. Franklin County does have a leash law, however they are very lenient on the Island. The biggest enforcement is poop-scoopin’. They take that pretty serious. We allow our children off leash when we are the only dogs for a short distance. We leash them when other dogs approach. So far the best dog friendly beach we’ve ever been to." "A lovely leash-free beach. The signs say dogs must be 'well behaved', but I think they should add 'and people must be well-behaved too!'" "This is a special place because of its beautiful pet-friendly beach. My dogs love to play in the water. I'm not sure about the leash law, but there are always people walking up and down the beach with their dogs. It may be that you have to keep your dogs on a leash in the public part of the beach, but the beach areas that back up to the rental homes are a lot more lenient. And of course you have to clean up after your dog." "This island is the perfect place to romp hassle-free with your dog. Some of the island is state park land where dogs aren't allowed, but the rest of the island allows dogs on 6-foot leashes or off-leash, if you keep them under voice control." 2. Carrabelle Beach Located off A1A. Dogs must be on leash when people are around. Otherwise, dogs can be off-leash, but must be under voice control. One of our readers said this is a nice area and there are picnic tables and restrooms nearby.
