President Bush has signed The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS) into law. That means states must now accommodate service animals and pets in their disaster plans if they want to qualify for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants. That's money to use to build pet-friendly disaster shelters and offer special assistance to people with pets during emergencies. This is an issue for which time has more than come. At least 50,000 pets were stranded during Hurricane Katrina because pets weren't allowed in emergency shelters. I can't remember having to publish a correction before. I try hard to be careful, but last month we reported the Casa Monica Hotel in St. Augustine to be pet-friendly. Despite being listed in the tourism industry's centralized data base as allowing pets, we've learned they changed their minds but never updated their listing. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone. This sort of thing reminds all of us that the pet-friendly status of places can and does change, sometimes quickly. So even though readers can now browse the latest data base and make reservations on FloridaPets.net for pet-friendly hotel/motel facilities, it's important to verbally double check pet policies, no matter what's shown in writing under a facility's listing. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature a ghoulish event, a vacation spot with a split personality, a photo of happiness in fur, a few pet-related tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win delicious pumpkin-flavored doggie cookies in spooky Halloween shapes baked by the now-famous 7 Dogs Tropical Bakery. Just check the end of the NewsPetter for the scoop on how to enter. Speaking of prizes, congratulations to Christa Whitaker of Cape Coral and her dogs, Tessa Bella, Luce, Grigia, Chickie, Annie, Rocky, Gizmo, Pancho, Panchita, Pepito, Coco and Katie, the winners of last month's contest. By the way, that's three-year-old Gizmo above. He's the ShihTzu companion to Barry and Jodie Kronsberg of Boynton Beach and he's all ready for some devilish fun. We are happy to welcome another new advertiser, DiscoverK9.com. They provide obedience training for all breeds. You can check out their programs under our Sponsors section below.

Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
By Patricia Collier The name of this event is simply irresistible. Ghoul's and Drool's is a fundraiser for The Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County. It will be held Saturday, October 28, from noon to 2 p.m. at Fisherman's Village, located at 1200 West Retta Esplanade in Punta Gorda. For what will be an annual event, sponsor Salty Paws has devised creative-sounding games like Bobbing for Bones, Doggie Donut Jump and Tricks for Treats. Of course they'll also have the ever-popular pet-person look alike contest and a costume contests for dogs and cats. Prizes will be awarded for funniest, scariest and most original. There's a $5.00 per pet donation to enter the contests. Space is limited, so register ASAP. Dogs and cats will also be invited to "Lick or Treat" at Salty Paws and a pet psychic will be on hand to read kitty and doggie paws for a $1.00 donation per pet. It's all going to add up to fun for pets and people and will benefit a worthy cause, so come out and drool with all the ghouls!
By Patricia Collier Our vacation temptation of the month is Turtle Beach Resort. Known as "The Hidden Jewel of Siesta Key", these charming accommodations are indeed gems. Guests relax in Caribbean-style, waterfront cottages, each with a special name and a private hot tub and secluded patio, as shown here, peeking out from the "Victorian." Siesta Key is an eight-mile-long barrier island connected to Sarasota by two bridges. The Resort's cottages sit at the end of Siesta Key, along the waterfront of Little Sarasota Bay, a short walk from secluded Turtle Beach (think shells!) on the Gulf of Mexico. Even though the area is laid back, there's plenty to see, such as the Ringling Museum of Art, Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary, Sarasota Jungle Gardens and more. Ten of the cottages at Turtle Beach Resort are set aside for pets. There is a 10 percent fee per pet, discounted to 15 percent for two pets if they weight less than 75 pounds, more if they're larger. While dogs are not permitted on the beaches, there are several pet-friendly parks and beaches in the area. Plus, canine companions are encouraged as unique passengers aboard the Resort's complimentary canoes and kayaks, and as welcomed guests at the outdoor dining area of the nearby Turtle Beach Pub, Big Olaf Creamery, Blase Cafe, Siesta Key Oyster Bar and the Siesta Key location of The Old Salty Dog.

Meet Buffy, a middle-aged mutt destined to live like a princess. She's companion to May Lattanzio and family of Bayou George in Bay County. May found her via the internet, abandoned by thoughtless humans. "Through online contacts, I was able to find a new friend who pulled her from the shelter where she had been left and had her spayed and sent to me on Delta Airlines." May said. Buffy loves to swim in the kiddie pool kept filled for the family dogs in summer. May said Buffy is happiest when she is stinky, matted, wet and full of sand. "Whoever put her in that impoundment never thinks of her, I'm sure. But fate was kind to all of us that day." she said. Editor's Note: May Lattanzio is a freelance writer/photographer who has been involved with dog rescue for years. She is the author of Waltz on the Wild Side - An Animal Lover's Journal, available on Amazon. Little Franky is brushing up on his eating out manners. Are you and your canine pal ready? We hope so because doggie dining is becoming a reality in more and more places. Starting in November, we'll use this space to feature a monthly pet-friendly eatery. Let us know if you have a location to suggest. As most of you know, I've been compiling a list of where doggie dining is either in progress of being implemented or already a done deal - see link below. Please help me keep this list updated by letting me know what's going on in your area. If doggie dining hasn't come to your area yet, check out our How-to Page, which includes a sample letter that might help you reach out to your elected officials about this matter.
Hotels that allow large dogs are beating their competitors that limit weight for pet guests. Per a press release from Pet Newswire, nearly 48% of travelers with pets travel with pets over 31 pounds. 34% of those surveyed travel with dogs over 50 pounds. Hotels are quickly realizing this untapped market and are adjusting weight limits to coincide with the growing market for large dog accommodations. This month's featured vacation, the Turtle Beach Resort, is a terrific example with their "no size limit" policy. Pets can be included in protection orders for spouses and partners leaving abusive relationships - at least in Maine. The Pine Tree State recently passed a law that allows judges to include the family pet or pets in the orders, showing the trend to recognize that some abusers try to exert power over their victims by harming pets. We're looking into which Florida lawmakers might want to sponsor such legislation here.
