We'd like to welcome our new subscribers and extend a warm hello-back to all our current readers. Our furry crew hopes everyone has a spook-tacular month, filled with lots of treats. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), more than three-and-a-half million Americans will be purchasing Halloween products for their pets this year, spending an average of $13 per gift. Truly, part of the fun of sharing our lives with animals is involving them in our commemorations and celebrations. Being guardian to a blind dog can be
challenging, but Sarah Whitman's new booklet called
Cori's Vision,
the Blind Dog
Guide, can help make it a gratifying journey
as well. Sarah's own dog, Cori, went blind at
age two and Sarah has developed this resource for
others from their experiences along the way. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature a barking party, an intimate get-away, a photo of a gentle giant, a few travel tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win delicious doggie biscuits in sun, sand and surf-inspired shapes from the new Seven Dogs Tropical Bakery, owned by none other than the canines at FloridaPets.net. Just check the end of the NewsPetter for all the poop on how to enter. And speaking of prizes, congratulations to Sophia Lucchese and her toy poodle, Oscar, of Boca Raton, Florida, the winners of last month's contest.

Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
Calling all animal lovers: Barktoberfest IV in Seville Square in Pensacola is for you! The festival will be held Saturday, October 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be full of fun activities for pets and their people—and human kids too! There will be contests, raffles with great prizes, shopping, singing, photographs, refreshments and more! Registration for the pet contest starts at 9 a.m. The contest begins an hour later with categories of Best Costume, Most Unique Pet, Best Trick, Pet/Guardian Look-alike, Best Mixed Breed, Biggest and Smallest. Entry fee is $5 and all proceeds will go to the dogs and cats at the Humane Society of Pensacola, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. Other activities include onsite pet portraits, appearances by local celebrities, and a demonstration by Pensacola Active Dogs. Visitors can browse through pet-related products or hang out with some of the adoptable dogs from the Humane Society and maybe take home a new best friend to bring to next year's festival of the barks! For more information about this activity, check out the Web site of the Humane Society of Pensacola.
By Patricia Collier The pet-friendly vacation spot we've selected for October was built in 1870. Despite total restoration, Chelsea House Pool & Gardens in Key West has maintained its 19th century elegance. Visitors are treated to surroundings accentuated by hardwood floors, 14-foot high ceilings, tongue and groove wood walls, antiques and porches and balconies wrapped in colorful, tropical plants. A lovely heated, outdoor pool around which breakfast is served every morning and a separate area for private sunbathing add modern-day romantic touches. The yesteryears and todays add up to the perfect couple's escape at the Chelsea House Pool & Gardens. While children are not permitted, pets are allowed in certain rooms. There is a $15 per day pet fee, but no deposit is required. You'll need to let the facility know about your pet(s) when you make your reservation. There's so much to do in Key West and so little space to tell you about it here. Check out Best On Key West for details on topic-specific tours and other activities you may wish to sample on your visit to one of the most unique islands in the world.
By Patricia Collier Oral disease is the No. 1 health problem diagnosed in dogs and cats. But if you follow the steps we've outlined, you'll increase your pet's chances of always having healthy, pearly whites...
Meet Maximus, companion to Charles & Odette Trotter of Pensacola, Florida. Max is a two-year-old bullmastiff who weighs 125 pounds. But don't let his size mislead you. As shown here, with his feline sister's babies, he is as gentle as a lamb. You couldn't ask for better references, Max, and we hear your sitting fees are reasonable as well! Would you like FloridaPets.net to feature your pet (s) in the NewsPetter or as Pet of the Week on the Web site? If so, please email WebMistress. Send 1-3 photos of your pet(s) and tell us things like breed, age, sex, personality traits, likes and dislikes, how you found each other and anything else you would like to share with others. Please type "Submission" in the subject line of your note and send your photos in JPG or GIF format only.
Pepper, companion to Patricia & Chris Collier, owners of FloridaPets.net. Many of you write us, asking for more photos of our fur kids, so we'll take this opportunity to introduce Pepper. He's a miniature poodle, a bit over a year old. His previous human had asked her vet to put him to sleep because he was deaf. One email and one phone call later, Pepper found his forever home - with us. Our poodle boy is loving, playful, smart and oh, did we mention he hears - just fine? A pet loss support group called "Beloved Buddies" meets the first and last Sunday of every month. The meetings will take place at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton, in the children's tot lot which is on West Yamato Road, 1/4 mile past Cain Blvd. (If weather does not permit, group members will be called and given an alternate location.) Beloved Buddies, Inc. is a caring group of people who understand the pain of losing our most precious buddies. For more information, contact Debbie Feibus at belovedbuddies@adelphia.net or call 561-901-4800. The pet travel industry is growing by almost 20 percent a year, according to the Independent Pet and Animal Transportation Association International. We hope the lodging industry is paying attention. Betcha didn't know! Sixty-five million U.S. dogs produce more than 17,000 tons of doodoo each day, spread over 120 million piles all over the country, according to Dogipot Inc., a Florida firm that makes poop bags and other products. Senior citizens living in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties may be eligible for pet food delivery. This service is provided at no charge to participating seniors. For more information, go to SPCA of Central Florida and click the link for "Pet Food Xpress." Time for the repetitive
