We've got big news! Last week, we added a really neat feature to FloridaPets.net. Now, not only can you search for a pet-friendly vacation accommodation on our site, you can make reservations right there as well. Many readers have been asking for this, so be sure to check it out! Doggie dining is becoming a reality in more and more places. I've been compiling a list of cities where it's either in progress of being implemented or already a done deal. Please help me keep this list updated - let me know what's going on in your area. In addition, I also want to list the restaurants where canines can join their humans outdoors, a project for which I'll need your assistance. If doggie dining hasn't come to your area yet, check out our How-to Page, which includes a sample letter that might help you reach out to your elected officials about this matter. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature an event celebrating dogs, a get-away in Florida's oldest city, a chapter out of the bestseller The Chihuahua Code, a few pet-related tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win delicious doggie cookies in sand, sea and sun-inspired shapes from the now-famous 7 Dogs Tropical Bakery, owned by none other than the canines at FloridaPets.net. Just check the end of the NewsPetter for all the poop on how to enter. And speaking of prizes, congratulations to Debbie Friedland of Plantation and Tonka, her Pomeranian, the winners of last month's contest. On a closing note, I've been trying to brush up on my photography skills. The above photo is my latest effort at artisically revealing the intelligence and intensity of Penny, our youngest border collie. (Or maybe she was just hungry!) We are honored to welcome a new advertiser this month, Pet Fun Planners. They've got everything you need to throw a party for your pet and his or her home dawgs. Just in time for the holidays, you'll want to check out their offerings under our Sponsors section below.
We hope everyone finds the FloridaPets.net Web
site useful and we hope everyone will enjoy this issue
of the
NewsPetter. Your opinions matter, so please
write us with any comments, suggestions or
requests. Until next
month, thanks for "tailing along"
with us and remember our motto:
Patricia Collier
Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
By Patricia Collier Mark your calendars for the 6th Annual Fort Walton Beach Dog Daze, to be held Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at The Landing in Fort Walton Beach. They'll be lots of music at this all-day event, as well as pet readings by Sharon Renae, canine agility and flyball demonstrations and games for dogs, including the ever-popular Dachshund races. There will also be contests for dogs and their people, with prizes for Best Costume (check out a past winner in the photo above), the Smallest and Largest Dogs, the Pooch-Smooch, and others. You and your dog can take the Canine Good Citizen Test, you can have your pet micro-chipped, or arrange to get a great photo of your pal.
A $3 per dog registration donation is requested to help support the event. All well-behaved dogs over six-months-old are welcome but their humans must register them and provide proof of a current rabies vaccination. Also, they must be attached to their guardian by a non-retractable leash. In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, October 7, 2006. For more information about the Daze, go to 2006 Fort Walton Beach Dog Daze.
By Patricia Collier Our pet-friendly vacation location for September is in a city that ranks 8th in the top ten most dog-friendly small cities in the United States. Casa Monica in St. Augustine, Florida, was built in 1888 to resemble a medieval castle. Because of this, we thought it might interest you as a spooky October getaway. Indeed, St. Augustine has some great ghost tours (dog-friendly, of course!) and some participants claim seeing some ghosties at Casa Monica! Once owned by Henry Flagler, Casa Monica is now a four Diamond hotel with 138 rooms and multi-level suites. It also boasts a four-star restaurant, piano lounge and several upscale shops. This castle away from home is located amidst an abundance of pet-friendly downtown attractions, including all of the historic district, the Fountain of Youth at 11 Magnolia Avenue and the St. Augustine Transfer Carriages at Avenida Menendez and Hypolita Street. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. In keeping with the city's "We Love Dogs" reputation, outdoor dining is alive and well in most St. Augustine restaurants with outside tables, including Florida Cracker Cafe, Scarlett O'Hara's, Harry's Seafood Bar and Grill, La Pentola, Pizza Garden and O.C. White's Seafood and Spirits. Editor's Note: Don't forget you can make your reservation with Casa Monica Hotel - and get great rates - without leaving FloridaPets.net.

Meet the Chihuahua crew, left to right: in the front row, the black one with flopped ears is Matilda, 8 months old. behind her, the light brown colored one that has his head on her shoulder is Duncan, 8 months. The fawn colored one behind him is Dingo, 8 months. The black one in the back is Rocky (who at age 8 weeks swallowed a teddy bear head and underwent surgery.) The one to the right of Rocky and the highest one up in the picture is Jesse, 3-years-old. Directly in front of him, the black one with the pink collar is Keisha, 2-years-old. The fawn one with the white chest in front is Toby, 8 months. All are companions to Debbie Dean, of Brunswick, Georgia. "Want to know how I got seven hyper Chihuahuas to sit in a chair for a picture?" Debbie asked, "It was really pretty funny. My husband took out the vacuum cleaner and started it. They are terrified of it so all seven, kind've in a wave, began to move sideways, backing away and all jumped in the chair! It sort of looked like those little sandpipers at the beach when a wave comes in. Hehe! They all moved in unison like it was choreographed!" Would you like FloridaPets.net to feature your pet(s) in the NewsPetter or as Pet(s) of the Week on the Web site? If so, please email Web Mistress. Send 1 or 2 photos of your pet(s) and tell us things like breed, age, sex, personality, likes, dislikes, how you found each other and anything else you would like to share with others. Please type "Submission" in the subject line of your note and send photos in JPG or GIF format.
The 2006 FloridaPets.net Pet-Friendly Hurricane Shelter Guide is now available. We are still in the process of updating information from last year, but if you bookmark the Pet-Friendly Hurricane Shelter Guide today, you need only refresh the page anytime you return to it and you'll always have the latest info as we post it. Speaking of hurricanes, if you want to get out of town before a storm hits and you've got some bucks to burn, HelpJet may be able to help you. Offering a "Hurricane Escape", the company will make sure you get a seat on a private jet to get away from the wrath of Mother Nature. Departing from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, this emergency evacuation flight allows pets too, at no additional cost. Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle has told one of our readers to have area restaurant owners contact him directly if they are interested in offering doggie dining. He said he's going to "give this a lot of press" and that restaurants should write or call him directly: City of Ft. Lauderdale, 101 NE 3rd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301-1100 or phone 954-761-5003, fax 954-828-5667, or email mayorjames@aol.com.
