We'd like to welcome our new subscribers and extend a warm hello-back to all our current readers. Our camera-hog houndie Fred here sends woofs to all your pets! There are a lot of groups helping animals caught up in the aftermath of disastrous Hurricane Katrina. We've tried to pull together a list of Florida animal groups involved in the rescue and/or care of some of the storm's most helpless victims and how you might be able to help them Help Animals From Katrina. If we've missed any, please let us know and we'll add them to the list. September is usually Florida's most active month for hurricanes. Are you ready? We've added more resources to the FloridaPets.net 2005 Pet-Friendly Hurricane Shelter Guide. For areas without any shelters allowing animals, we're tried to list nearby motels that will accept pets during evacuations. Remember, some pet-friendly shelters aren't designated until the last minute, so please check out the above link, bookmark it, keep referring to it if a storm approaches your area and be sure to tell other pet people. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature a dog walk that helps senior citizens, a salty, yet trendy get-away, a guest-written article from Sandy Golding about dog park safety, a photo of a "duo petite", a few travel tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! Congratulations to Ruth Gehring and her lab, Chocolate, of Powell, Ohio, the winners of last month's contest.
One last thing before you go off to enjoy the NewsPetter: FloridaPets.net now has its very own chat room, which you can access from FloridaPets.net. You can stop by and chat with us, if we're around, or chat with each other and maybe meet some new friends. It's also the perfect venue for rescue groups or dog park members to communicate with each other. You could even have an online group meeting or class there. It's your chat room, so just choose a sign in name and password and go chat! We hope everyone will enjoy this issue of the
NewsPetter. Please pass the word about
FloridaPets.net and write us with any suggestions or
requests. Your opinion matters to us. Until next
month, thanks for "tailing" along
with us and remember our motto:

Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
By Patricia Collier "Who Let Them Dawgs Out" will be held Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grove City Manor in Grove City, Florida. All proceeds will benefit the John R. Glenn Foundation supporting affordable senior housing. The day's activities will be of paw-ticular fun for people with sociable - and leashed - canines and will include a Chinese auction, K-9 exhibition featuring Sgt. Mike Nichol and "Hex", a singing contest where you perform a duet with your dog pal, a costume contest and parade, lots of contests, prizes, food, information booths and more. By Patricia Collier The Best Western SeaSpray Inn is a full-service resort located on Singer Island, separated from Palm Beach by Lake Worth Inlet. From its rooftop, oceanfront restaurant to the wide, clean beaches, the SeaSpray strives to pamper and please. The facility is pet-friendly and there is a $15.00 per pet, per day fee. There is no deposit required. While a guest at the SeaSpray, you'll want to visit the 55,000-square foot Flagler Museum in Palm Beach and West Palm Beach's Clematis Street which "The Donald" himself has called, "The hottest street in Florida." Don't be surprised if you glimpse a few of Hollywood's "Beautiful People" hanging out at one of the area's many art galleries, fancy little boutiques or posh nightclubs. The SeaSpray is centrally located to all that is Florida. It's only 60 miles from Ft. Lauderdale, a city which is home to more than 40,000 yachts and often called the "Venice of America." A mere 77 mile drive takes you to the "Magic City" also known as Miami. And 178 miles away is Orlando, a theme park lover's feast.
By Sandy Golding Editor's Note: One of the founders of Paws Park at Wingate Park, Jacksonville Beach's first dog park which opened this past May, talks about what works at dog parks- and what doesn't. The photo here is from Paws Park's opening day.
A dog park is a playground for dog guardians and their dogs. Familiarizing yourself with a few simple concepts and understanding the whys behind the rules at dog parks will help keep the experience happy for everyone...

Find The Cheapest Gas Prices in Your Area by checking out Florida State Gas Prices. Did you know? According to the American Veterinary Association, 59 percent of American households have at least one pet, with the average having 2.4 animals. Therefore, municipal planners, county officials, even housing developers would do well to start accommodating better for people with companion animals. Check out the Petition to Allow Pets in Condos. Thousands of senior citizens in Florida have been denied the opportunity to improve their health and well-being with pet companionship in dwellings they own. Private home ownership should allow responsible persons to keep pets. For more information, go to Citizens for Pets in Condos. The petition is on that page, under "Sign the Petition."
