Alfresco doggie dining is slowly catching on in Florida. I've been compiling a list of cities where it's either in progress of being implemented or already a done deal. Please help me keep this list updated - let me know what's going on in your area. I'll also list restaurants where canines can join their humans outdoors, a project for which I'll welcome your input. Remember, Gov. Bush signed the law, but each local government must pass their own ordinance to permit the restaurants in their area to offer outdoor dining for dogs and their people. We've talked to officials from a few cities who've told us they won't even consider the idea unless enough customers and restaurants start asking for it. Therefore, it's important for willing restaurants and responsible dog guardians to start making their voices heard on this issue. Check out our How-to Page, which includes a sample letter that may help you reach out to your elected officials about this matter. Interesting link of the month: For the numerous humane societies and rescues that subscribe to the NewsPetter, I've found a great resource for those times when sturdy, attractive trade show type displays are needed. Check out Custom Displays for examples that will help your group put its best foot forward - for the animals. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature a jazzy pizzazzy event, a somewhat rustic get-away, a photo of a Top Cat, a few pet-related tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win delicious doggie cookies in sand, sea and sun-inspired shapes from the now-famous 7 Dogs Tropical Bakery, owned by none other than the canines at FloridaPets.net. Just check the end of the NewsPetter for all the poop on how to enter. And speaking of prizes, congratulations to Sharon Cole and her standard poodle, GiGi, of Jacksonville, Florida, the winners of last month's contest. By the way, the photo above was taken as our Shortcake, Pepper and Bert conducted experiments and inspections of a new doggie bed. Practice makes perfect, you know. Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
By Patricia Collier This is one of those events that must also take place in heaven. Picture it: another gorgeous day in the sunshine state. You pack up the picnic baskets, blankets, chairs, dogs and kids and head outdoors to enjoy some fresh air, yummy food and awesome jazz by the finest performers around. It's the Ft. Lauderdale's Jazz Brunch, four stages of free entertainment scheduled for the first Sunday of each month from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the city's very scenic downtown's Riverwalk. This year marks the 16th anniversary of the Jazz Brunch which will be held along the New River from Broward Center for the Performing Arts to the DDA Plaza. Yes, this celebration is dog-friendly and there's even a free doggie rest area where you and your furry companion can head when it's time for a break. For more information about the Jazz Brunch, including vendor applications and a schedule of performers through December, see Jazz Brunch.
By Patricia Collier Our pet-friendly vacation location for August is the unpretentious Navarre Beach Campground. Located between Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach off Hwy 98, the campground isn't just for tent and RV campers. There are also several neat cabins and "condo cabins", as shown here. The variety results in a unique community atmosphere among visitors. Navarre Beach Campground offers laundry facilities, heated pool, hot tub, fitness center, playground, video game room, pier, wireless internet and even computers with high speed internet access if you didn't pack yours for the trip. While animals are not allowed in the tent camping area, pets of all sizes and number are permitted in RVs and some of the cabins. There are no pet fees or deposits. There is a convenient pet walk area, but animals must be kept leashed. If you go, please be responsible, clean up after your pet indoors and out and make the managers glad they allow pets and the nice people they bring with them. The beautiful Santa Rosa Sound is the backdrop for the campground and the Gulf's beaches are only about five miles away. Leashed pets are permitted on the paved bicycling/walking path along Gulf Boulevard in Navarre Beach. Responding to some citizens requests, discussion is currently underway between the Santa Rosa County Commissioners about possibly designating a pet-friendly area on Navarre Beach. Some decisions should be made at the Commission's next meeting later this month. If approved, we'll post the info on our Pet-Friendly Parks and Beaches page.

Meet Harley Dude, companion to
Harley Dude was rescued from West Volusia Humane Society in June of 2005. Both of his hips had been crushed and healed on their own before he arrived at the shelter. Harley Dude is extremely cross eyed and walks a little funny, but, Judy says, he doesn't know he's disabled. "Every day with Harley Dude is an experience. He opens doors and cabinets, he talks up a storm and plays really hard with his toys," she said. According to Judy, Dude plays with their two large rescued dogs more than he does their other cat. "He has been such a blessing to us," Judy says, "He makes us laugh every day. People come to visit us just so they can play with 'The Dude'. He has enabled us to learn about true, unadulterated love." Would you like FloridaPets.net to feature your pet(s) in the NewsPetter or as Pet(s) of the Week on the Web site? Helping make the Panhandle pet-friendly is a group called Bay County Families with Dogs, Inc. This Panama City-based grassroots organization advocates for outdoor recreation opportunities for dogs and their people to enjoy together. Working against a tide of no-pets sentiment, trying to establish just a few pets-OK locations and events, they want to provide a large number of signed petitions to the state, asking that families and their furry companions be permitted to continue enjoying a small portion of beach on Shell Island. You and those you know can help by signing the petition found on the group's Web site Bay County Families with Dogs, Inc.,even if you don't live in Florida. It would assist this fine group tremendously, not to mention all the doggies just wanting a fun, wet romping with their humans once in a while! Senior citizens should not be denied pets in their own homes and Citizens for Pets in Condos is working hard to promote the benefits of pet companionship. The site includes a petition you can sign to help further the cause. Between online and on-paper signatures, the organization is more than halfway to the goal of 10,000 signatures, but they need your help to get to the top.
