We'd like to welcome our new subscribers and extend a warm hello-back to our current readers. Our sweet Fred here sends woofs to all your pets! Have you checked out the dog parks and pet-friendly beaches section on FloridaPets.net lately? We honestly feel we have the internet's most comprehensive listings of these places specific to the sunshine state, so please check in with that page periodically and let others know about it as well. The busiest part of hurricane season is coming up. Are you ready? We've added more resources to the FloridaPets.net 2005 Pet-Friendly Hurricane Shelter Guide. For areas without any shelters allowing animals, we're tried to list nearby motels that will accept pets during evacuations. Remember, some pet-friendly shelters aren't designated until the last minute, so please check out the above link, bookmark it, keep referring to it if a storm approaches your area and be sure to tell other pet people about it. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature an event if dogs played professionally, they'd probably be as good as people, a get-away to sand castles in the sky, er, Florida, that is, a guest-written article from Dy Witt about crate training, a photo of a dog with a built-in air conditioner and a few travel tips. By the way, congratulations to Barbara Robinson and her two dogs, Dakota and Sunflower, of St. Cloud, Florida, the winners of last month's contest.
We hope everyone will enjoy this issue of the
NewsPetter. Please pass the word about
FloridaPets.net and write us with any suggestions or
requests. Your opinion matters to us. Until next
month, thanks for "tailing" along
with us and remember our motto:

Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
By Patricia Collier Mark your calendar now for Bark in the Ball Park, where you can enjoy a minor league game between the Clearwater Threshers and the Sarasota Red Sox with your best furry friend by your side. The action takes place Saturday, August 20, at the Brighthouse Networks Field in Clearwater. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the game starts at 7:05 p.m. The Threshers are the Class 'A' Affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies and are 8-2 for the season.
Take along your leashed dog and enjoy an evening filled with entertainment, doggie vendors, a silent auction, prizes, and other fun stuff, like doggie/human sundaes and dog/person look-alike contest. Ticket prices are $8.00 premium box, $6.00 field box, $4.00 for seniors and children and $3.00 per dog. You may purchase tickets at Brighthouse Field or online at Clearwater Threshers. For further information about the event, please call the Humane Society of Pinellas (727) 797-7722.
By Patricia Collier The month's vacation spot is the sort of place where I'd love to take up full time residence. Mitchell's Sand Castles is located on Sanibel Island, a Florida locale that was recently rated one of the top-10 best beaches in the sunshine state by the Travel Channel. Mitchell's dates back to the 60s. Unlike many motels chains with cookie-cutter rooms, Mitchell's Sand Castles offers unique, private cottages with tropical names, like Sea Star, pictured here, Dunes, Coquina, Ocean Mist, and more. Pets are welcome at Mitchell's for a $5.00 per night fee. In addition, all area beaches are pet-friendly, but dogs must be kept on leashes and guardians must clean up after them.
Sanibel's beaches are not only gorgeous, they are famous for shelling. While there, check out this great little shell guide which suggests the best places on the island for shells, the best time to discover them and how to care for them once you find them. With all the sunning and shelling, you'll find you won't need much else on this vacation. But if you do get antsy, there are plenty of nearby restaurants, theatres and shoppes.
By Dy Witt Teaching your puppy crate training is the first and best step in his or her life. It makes all the other steps in his training go so much smoother, much like a solid foundation in a house makes for superior walls. One reason for crate training is that dogs love predictability. To know what is going to happen in any situation makes your pup happy, more apt to be the best-behaved dog he can possibly be. Wouldn't you love to be able to do this for your dog...

Did you know? Speaking of vaccinations, on May 27, 2005, Governor Bush signed a new rabies law which requires local governments and veterinarians to recognize the duration of the three-year rabies vaccines. For more information, contact your veterinarian. Check out the Petition to Allow Pets in Condos. Thousands of senior citizens in Florida have been denied the opportunity to improve their health and well-being with pet companionship in dwellings they own. Private home ownership should allow responsible persons to keep pets. For more information, go to Citizens for Pets in Condos. The petition is on that page, under "Sign the Petition."
