This issue marks the third anniversary of the NewsPetter and later this fall, FloridaPets.net will mark five years online! To all our readers, we offer a big thank you for the kindness and information you so willingly share with us. Our lab mix, Pogo, is pictured here, showing off her smile of happiness. We promise to continue tracking down all that is pet-friendly in our beautiful state. As you may know, Governor Jeb Bush recently signed into law legislation that would allow Florida restaurants the option of allowing dogs to join their people in designated outdoor areas. There's just one snag: local governments must pass ordinances to permit the restaurants to do so and many are already saying they won't even consider the idea unless enough customers and restaurants start asking for it. So, it's going to be important for willing restaurants and responsible dog guardians to start making their voices heard on this issue. To help, we have put together a guide of sorts, including a sample letter, which we hope will make it easy for you to reach out to your elected officials on this very important matter. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature a ball-listic event, a get-away centered around a dog park, a double gold photo, a few pet-related tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win delicious doggie cookies in sand, sea and sun-inspired shapes from the now-famous 7 Dogs Tropical Bakery, owned by none other than the canines at FloridaPets.net. Just check the end of the NewsPetter for all the poop on how to enter. And speaking of prizes, congratulations to Michael Walkowski and Peter Petrucci and their dogs, Smoke and Coal, all of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the winners of last month's contest. We would like to welcome our newest advertiser, BarkTalk.com, whose New Puppy Announcements are just adorable - look for their ad under our Sponsors section!
We hope everyone finds the FloridaPets.net Web
site useful and we hope everyone will enjoy this issue
of the
NewsPetter. Your opinions matter, so please
write us with any comments, suggestions or
requests. Until next
month, thanks for "tailing along"
with us and remember our motto:

Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
By Patricia Collier As part of the 2006 Minor League Baseball season, Dog Days of Summer will be held on three separate Saturdays: June 24; July 22 and August 19. The events will be held at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter which has partnered with Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League on their monthly salute to "Man's Best Friend." Start time for each Dog Days of Summer game is 6:05 p.m. with the gates opening at 5:00 p.m. On those nights, dogs will be admitted into the stadium with a $5.00 purchase of a "Peggy Pass" which will be good for all three Dog Days of Summer dates. Game tickets for dog owners are $7.00 For the three evenings, in addition to watching exciting Minor League Baseball, dog lovers will have their very own sections of the stadium. All proceeds from the Peggy Pass will benefit the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which provides service to 10,000 cats and dogs each year in the Palm Beach County.
By Patricia Collier While this month's pet-friendly get-away, The Palms Island Resort & Marina in Sanford, is quite picturesque, we're decided to use a photo of a dog park that's near the resort. That's because Paw Park of Historic Sanford has been voted the #2 Best Dog Park in the U.S.A. Congrats to the human and canine organizers! The Palms Island Resort and Marina is located right on the 9,400-plus-acres Lake Monroe, not too far from the Paw Park. They charge a $20 per night pet fee and there's a two pet limit. The Palms is adjacent to Sanford's Riverwalk, which is also pet friendly. One of our readers tells us there's a nice pet-friendly restaurant, also adjacent to the Palms, called Oscar's Waterfront Bar & Grill and it's not frowned on if you wish to walk your leashed dog around the downtown area. (We hope it isn't necessary to remind you to clean up after your pet!)
Simply put, this is one of the most dog-friendly get-aways we've ever found. Staying in Sanford will provide both you and your dog(s) a real haven and your furry companion can go home and brag about being at the now-famous dog park, where The Beautiful Canines frolicked without a care in the world. And where his or her humans enjoyed the quaint, historical nature of a town in Central Florida that truly welcomes both people and pets.

Our Pet-Friendly Hurricane Shelter Guide for 2006 is now available. We are still in the process of updating info from last year, but if you bookmark the Pet-Friendly Hurricane Shelter Guide, you need only refresh the page anytime you return to it and you'll always have the latest info as we get and post it. Take Your Pet to Work Week is this week, June 18- 24, 2006. According to a recent online survey, two-thirds of dog guardians said they would work more hours if they could take their dog to work and almost a third said they would take a 5 percent pay cut to do so. Are you allowed to take your dog to work? If not, what would you be willing to trade for being allowed to have your canine buddy at work?
