The NewsPetter is two years old today! We'd like to welcome our new subscribers and extend a warm hello-back to our current subscribers. Literally hundreds of you have been tailing along with us since the very beginning. Thank you, everyone! FloridaPets.net went online in October of 2001 and we added the NewsPetter in 2003. Our goal for both the Web site and the eZine continues to be to provide resources to help people find and enjoy the pet-friendly lifestyle in Florida. Hurricane season is upon us once again. Many people wrote us last year, saying how helpful they found our pet-friendly emergency accommodations information. So we've been busy compiling the FloridaPets.net 2005 Pet-Friendly Emergency Shelter Guide. To make this the most comprehensive resource guide found for the sunshine state, it must remain fluid as we call cities and counties, scour the Web, and add and clarify information. Some areas don't designate pet-friendly shelters until the last minute, so please bookmark the above link and keep checking it as storms approach your area. You might also wish to review our Hurricane Safety Tips for Animals. In this our second-year anniversary issue, we feature an all-fun-no-foul activity, an unusual vacation idea, a photo of an angel caught in action and a few travel tips.
We hope everyone will enjoy this issue of the
NewsPetter. Please pass the word about
FloridaPets.net and write us with any suggestions or
requests. Your opinion matters to us. Until next
month, thanks for "tailing" along
with us and remember our motto:

Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
The bases will be loaded with fun when the Ft. Myers Miracles meet the Sarasota Reds and play hosts to this year's Dog Daze of Summer Pet Fair. Your canine pal gets in free when you attend the game, scheduled for Thursday, June 30, at the Bill Hammond Stadium inside the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers. The Hammond stadium is recognized as one of baseball's top 5 spring training facilities.
Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and the game starts at 7:05 p.m. Animal services and vendors will be around all evening with adoptable animals and lots of pet goodies. Tickets are $4.00 to $6.00 and can be purchased online at Miracle Baseball.
By Patricia Collier According to Family-Reunion, most people think summer is the best time to hold family reunions. This year, rather than the same old picnic and sack races, may we suggest a weekend or week-long get together at an oceanfront vacation rental where everyone chips in on the cost? Ideal for small to medium-size families - yes, and their pets - a grouping away from everybody's home just might be the perfect way to celebrate the youngest, the oldest, and all the ones in the middle. Collins Vacation Rentals, Inc. on St. George Island in the Panhandle offers cottages, homes, duplexes, town homes and condominiums for any size crowd. St. George Island is called, "The Uncommon Florida" because it's still unspoiled and uncrowded. Only 75 miles from Tallahassee, it's a spot sure to please all ages. Collins Vacation Rentals handle over 100 pet-friendly properties with wonderful names such as, "A Dog's Life" or "Dolphin Dance", "Teenie Bikini" or, my favorite, "No Worries." While a few units sleep 6 or less, there are just as many that sleep a dozen - plus a few pets, of course! Leashed pets are allowed on the area beaches, except those within the St. George Island State Park. Psssttt! A little secret I've learned about Florida...the best places are usually accessible only by bridge. This is one of those places.
Meet Maggie, companion to Jane and Charlie Shoenberger of Sarasota. This little bundle of Boston terrier has been busy helping her dad recover from some mighty serious surgery. "Maggie and Charlie are quite the pair," Jane tells us, "They walk and play together and her antics are just delightful! She has been just what the doctor ordered!"
Oopss! You've caught two and one-half-year-old Ernie doing the summer thang. Companion to Don Drennon of Sunrise, Florida, Ernie works 9-5 on his black lab tan, but will moonlight as our Sponsor Dog for this month's Travel Tips & Tails. Another important storm-related link to bookmark: Florida Division of Emergency Management. Whose zzzzzzzs are those? According to a Sealy Snooze Report survey, 67 percent of participants said they routinely sleep with their pets. Are you trippin'? "This year, we're expecting about 15 million people will take their pet with them on a trip," said Bob Vetere from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. Wow, that's a 20 percent increase from last year! Time for the repetitive

Pet hair can be a real nuisance. One of our friend's child calls it "pests' hair." It can get on your clothes, furniture and upholsteries, turning your home into a huge hairball. The Evercare Pet Hair and Lint Remover uses an adhesive roller for quick and easy cleanup without damaging surfaces. It also works great for lint, fuzz and dandruff. Small and lightweight, you can carry it anywhere. And for a limited time, NewsPetter subscribers can get a 2-pack for just $2.99 by visiting Hair and Lint Remover.
