Poll: Taking Your Pet Along

Your Editor

Yes, that's me and one of my interesting little pals, Geezer. I was the kind of kid who had to pet EVERY animal I saw and that really hasn't changed. I was bitten by a strange dog once and totally freaked everyone out. Luckily, my parents found the owner and I didn't have to endure those horrible Rabies treatments. I don't think it would have mattered to me though...animal passion is one of those things you can't just let go.

If you haven't checked out FloridaPets.net in a while, please do. I've totally redesigned the site and have added lots of content. Thanks for being part of our debut issue...we welcome all your feedback...about the site and this, the first issue of Florida Pet's NewsPetter!

Go to FloridaPets.net right now....

   Greetings!

Hello, pet people! Other sites have a newsletter. Here at FloridaPets.net, we have a news...you got it...petter. This is our debut "NewsPetter" and we hope you'll enjoy it.

FloridaPets.net appeared on the internet in the fall of 2000 with a goal of offering pet-friendly resources to Florida visitors and residents alike. We all know our pets are members of the family and here at FloridaPets.net, we believe in taking them along for the ride, the trip, the vacation...the lifetime!

At our house, you have to step over a few squeak toys, balls and blankets to get around. We share our lives with six dogs and two cats and are quite honored to do so. The enjoyment, comfort, entertainment and love they provide so freely humbles us. Leaving home without them is just not acceptable! If you are receiving this NewsPetter, you know exactly what we are talking about.

We want our subscriber base to keep growing -- don't forget, it's FREE -- and we'll keep adding content to YOUR NewsPetter to make it as interesting and helpful as possible. We absolutely encourage you to give us your opinions on items relating to YOUR NewsPetter and to any topic discussed herein or to any topic you'd like to see discussed.

Thanks for "tailing" along with FloridaPets.net.

Sincerely,

Patricia Collier, Editor

P.S. I am using this newsletter program for the first time and am still learning. If you cannot view HTML in your email program, please write to me at WebMistress@FloridaPets.net and I'll learn how to take out all those strange little marks for you by our next issue...:)

  • Featured Florida Pet-Friendly Vacation Destination of the Month
  •   "Destin, Florida Vacation Rentals" By Patricia Collier, Editor

Destin, Florida has a wonderful real estate management company called DestinFLRentals. They offer weekly rentals of some of the nicest condos you've ever seen, many right on the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico, and all PET FRIENDLY.

You can view some of the units at DestinFLRentals.com and make your reservation by calling 1-800-998-1035, access code #42. Rates are seasonal of course, and they do require a damage deposit at the time of rental. But if your pet behaves, you'll get 100% of the fee back when you leave.

When I talked with Jim at DestinFLRentals last week, he said their units are booked until September, but hey, we all know September and October are two of the milder months here in the Sunshine State. (Plus, the rates for accommodations get lower after October 4.)

Destin is a quaint town in the Panhandle of Florida, near Fort Walton. In September, you can enjoy the Race Around the Island, which features 100 sailboats, navigating full-throttle around Okaloosa Island.

October features the Destin Sea Food Festival right on the gulf and the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival. It's a beautiful area, still relatively uncrowded, so give it a try and when you call for reservations, tell the folks at DestinFLRentals you were referred to them by FloridaPets.net because of their friendly policy toward pets. (No, we aren't getting a cut, we just think they'd appreciate knowing.)

Editor's note: Each month, we'll feature a pet- friendly location or destination you can enjoy with your pet. If you know of a special spot, drop us a note so we can feature it here.

  •   Heat Stroke in Pets
    By Patricia Collier, Editor

Florida's really warm weather is here and this is an excellent time for us to remind everyone we know about the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles. The Florida heat is brutal, even under a nice shade tree, but in a car, it is deadly.

Yes, FloridaPets thinks you should take your pet with you wherever you go, but leaving them in your car, even with the windows down, even for just a couple of minutes, is not only foolish, IT IS ILLEGAL.

That's correct, folks. The next time you see an animal trapped inside a hot car, even with the windows "cracked", you are witnessing a crime.

I've talked with law enforcement officers and they said leaving an animal in a parked car, unattended, with no shelter from the heat in Florida, is a third degree felony and punishable by up to 5 years in prison or $10,000 fine, or both. This is addressed in the Florida Statutes 828.12 relating to animal cruelty.

Heat inside a vehicle can climb to 120° in a matter of minutes, even with the windows partially open. High temperatures can cause pets to suffer from brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation. If you see a pet in need, contact the authorities immediately.

By the way, if you'd like to be more in the know about what constitutes a crime relating to animals in the state of Florida, bookmark this site:
