We'd like to welcome our new subscribers and offer a warm welcome back to all our current readers. Our new guy, Fred the basset, hasn't taken a road trip with us yet, but we think he'll probably be game. We've found him to be a sweet companion with a "wee bit" of stubbornness thrown in. Did you know in 2004, pet travel rose 33 percent to 20 million -- 80 percent were dogs. That's according to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association Inc. Pet-friendly places to vacation, play and just hang out are all increasing to meet the amazing demand. We are proud that Florida is leading the way. Why not make May the month you finally stick your cat outside? No, we don't mean loose, we're talking about a cat enclosure, where your cat can "be outdoors" but safely away from forces that could do harm to felines - and away from baby birds with which your cat doesn't need to be playing. You can buy enclosures, but if you're handy with a hammer, you can build your own. Check out Cat Enclosures for tons of ideas. We're working on one for our kitty and once completed, we'll share a photo with you here. In this month's NewsPetter, we feature an event where you and your dog can have a ball (literally), a vacation spot perhaps once frequented by the likes of pirates, a photo of a very distinguished lady canine and a few travel tips. We hope everyone will enjoy this issue of the
NewsPetter. Please pass the word about
FloridaPets.net and write us with any suggestions or
requests. Your opinion matters to us. Until next
month, thanks for "tailing" along
with us and remember our motto:
Patricia Collier
Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:
By Patricia Collier While you might be able to snag a hot dog or two at this event, they'll be lots of other kinds of dogs hangin' out there too - of the non-food variety, thank you very much! Yup, it's time for Bark At The Park 2005 at Pro Player Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale. Bring your best friend, like the stylish fellow pictured here wearing his favorite team's t-shirt, and cheer on the Florida Marlins as they take on the New York Mets Thursday, May 26, at 7:05 p.m.
They'll be lots of fun stuff, including kiddy pools where your canine pal can cool off a bit in between innings. Tickets are $12.00 for adults, $6.00 for kids, age 12 and under and $6.00 per dog. All proceeds from the sale of dog tickets will benefit the Humane Society of Broward County. For more information or to purchase tickets over the phone, please call Carrie Neff at 305-749-1832.
By Patricia Collier The Tortuga Inn Beach Resort on Anna Maria Island bears the same name as the Haitian island where pirates ruled in the 1700s. Nestled between the intercoastal waterway and Bradenton Beach on the Gulf of Mexico, the area has been called, "The Last Great Place." It is certainly one of the most beautiful places in the sunshine state. Accommodations at the Tortuga Inn Beach Resort range from a simple hotel room right up to indulgent Gulf view suites. All units have an airy, Florida decor and all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. Pets under 35 pounds are welcome in some rooms with a one-time $25 fee. While dogs are not allowed on Bradenton Beach, there is an area along the bay, in nearby Palma Sola, where people and dogs frequently stroll. In addition, a little shoppe with a pet theme, called, "Riverbanks Collection" on Manatee Avenue in Bradenton, on the land side of Anna Maria Island, welcomes "groomed pets, held, or on a leash."
By Patricia Collier Meet Miss Guess, companion to Chris Clearwaters of Jacksonville. Miss Guess is a 12-year-old cocker spaniel who is currently going through some serious health challenges, but despite it all, has kept her sunny disposition. "She is such a very good dog," Chris said, "very friendly and loving. I just wanted to show everyone how cute she is." Hey, Miss Guess! Here's a great big get-well-soon wish from all the readers of FloridaPets.net and the NewsPetter!
