Dear Patricia,

If you have trouble viewing emails with images, please read the March NewsPetter here.

It is a bird? Is it a bunny? Nope, it's a Coconut, a 10-year-old terrier mix who adopted FloridaPets.net reader Sandy Golding on May 1, 1999. When Sandy's family moved to Florida, Coconut inspired her to start an effort for a leash-free dog park in Jacksonville Beach. Sandy worked hard to organize people, get petition signatures, research other dog parks, attend events to educate people about dog parks and put together proposals for the city. Jacksonville Beach approved the dog park idea and on May 1, 2005, Paws Park at Wingate Park dog park officially opened - on Coconut's "gotcha day." A true Florida girl, Coconut loves to travel, swim, sail and make new doggie pals.

What's New?
Chococlate Bunny Reesie

First Coast No More Homeless Pets in Jacksonville will be opening a clinical facility in a few weeks. It will be located on Norwood Avenue near I-95, will have 16,000 square feet, cost $2.3 million and be one of the five largest in the nation.

A shout out goes to 2-year-old Reesie, the chocolate bunny, er, labrador, pictured above. Companion to Gayle Deshong of Tampa, Reesie loves to play fetch on land and in the water at the beach, and go for car rides and hikes.

As I mentioned last month, we lost our oldest dachshund, Shortcake, February 19. If you'd like, go here to read a little tribute I wrote for her.

There's a movement afoot, or should I saw apaw, to pass an amendment to the current doggie dining law (known in Tallahassee evidently, as the "DBPR / Dog Friendly Dining regulation") which would remove the pilot project language and the sunset language and subsequently make the program permanent. You can help nudge this along by writing to your lawmakers and asking for their support.

Multiple stings from a hive of more than 60,000 bees recently found between the walls of a home in Broadview Park caused the death of the two resident dogs. Officials from the State Agriculture Department say bees compromise everyone's safety, including children and pets, and if problems develop, an exterminator should be hired immediately. Do this if your pet gets stung by bees.

Only in the sunshine state: The Florida Board of Cosmetology has banned using live fish in pedicures. Seems tiny fish were being used in foot soaks to nibble off calluses. And that violates the "no animals or pets in salons" state law. We think it should also violate the "weird ways to torture fish" law.

For several years, Fleet Peeples Park in Winter Park has played host to one of Florida's most popular off-leash dog parks. Sadly, that has changed as new rules now require pets to be on-leash from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends and holidays.

What retirement? Caboodle Ranch, Inc. is a one man (former contractor) and 30-acre cat rescue in Ponte Vedra Beach.

If you live near Delray Beach and would like to be able to (legally) romp along the shore with your pooch, you can sign a petition at Delray Dog Beach.

The Florida Keys SPCA Spring Carnival is coming up April 3. A local pilot has provided the use of his entire hanger for the party which will include entertainment, raffles and more. This year's event will benefit the group's shelter which was severely damaged during Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

According to a recent survey of pet guardians by the American Pet Products Association, more than 21 percent of dog guardians and about 3 percent of cat guardians take their pets along on road trips.

The pen - or the email - is mightier than the sword. Here's where I go when I want to find out with which politician, federal, state or local, I need to launch a complaint. And speaking of politicians, did you know we have a list-in-progress of pet-friendly lawmakers in Florida?

Yes, a rumor that is true: Cocoa mulch used in yards can be harmful to your pet. Read why here.

Catch me live on internet radio next week. I'll be interviewed by Flash Silvermoon, noted animal communicator and healer on her show, "What the Animals Tell Me." We'll be talking about her good work for animals and the Aid for Pets information we've compiled on FloridaPets.net. To listen, tune in to Passionate Internet Voices Talk Radio Wednesday, March 25 from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. (Click the Internet Connection Audio Stream link.)

That's it for now. Thanks for continuing to "tail along" with FloridaPets.net. Drop us a note anytime you have a comment or suggestion, or would like us to feature your pet or a pet-friendly event in your area.
