Our lil' Shortcake joins us as we welcome our new subscribers and offer a warm welcome back to all our current readers. One feature on FloridaPets.net you might be missing is Product Picks. These are our reviews of new, pet-related items we've purchased and used ourselves. If we've found something useful or unique, this is where we share with you. Proceeds from some of the items go to help fund animal rescue efforts, so be sure to check out the archives. In this month's issue, we feature a grab-the-leash-and-go event, a vacation spot doing its own celebrating, an equine love story, travel tips, and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win a Patriotic Dog Leash Pooper Scooper Bag Holder and Bandana, sure to make you and your fur pal the hit of the dog park. The contest is for subscribers only, so be sure and sign up for the NewsPetter to get in on the fun. Speaking of contests, congratulations to Poppy Goforth of Winter Haven who won last month's prize, a Doggie Valentine Goodie Box from Whiskers & Wags Pet Bakery. We hope everyone will enjoy this issue of the
NewsPetter. Please pass the word about
FloridaPets.net and write us with any suggestions or
requests. Your opinion matters to us. Until next
month, thanks for "tailing" along
with us and remember our motto:

By Patricia Collier The Humane Society of Greater Miami's Walk for the Animals 2005 will be held Saturday, February 26, at the Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami. Photo is from last year's event. Join over 1,500 other animal lovers and their pets as they walk the beautiful mile-long course to celebrate companion animals. There's lots of fun stuff planned, including demonstrations by Miami-Dade Urban Search and Rescue Team, Waverunners Flyball Racing Team and Miami Obedience Club, all of which is topped off with some canine freestyle dancing by the Miami Furri Canes. Never fear, there will be some paws-on activities as well. You can look for your fur pal's inner "Dog"vinci at the Paw Art booth or test your canine's smarts at Doggie Fun Zone, an exciting obstacle course for dogs. You can even get your pet microchipped for a terrific price of only $20.00.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., canine contests begin at 9:30 a.m. and The Walk begins at 10:00 a.m. Registration fee is $50 per person and all money raised will go the the humane society. Participants will receive goodie bags, an event t-shirt and a doggie bandana. For more information, please call Nicole at 305-696-0800 ext.114 or visit the Humane Society of Greater Miami.
By Patricia Collier One of the nice things about the whole La Quinta Inn chain is their pet-friendly policy. The La Quinta Ft. Lauderdale Deerfield Beach Inn allows cats and dogs up to 50 pounds and they don't require extra nightly fees or hefty deposits, which FloridaPets.net readers always appreciate! The nicest thing about this particular La Quinta is where it's located, north of Fort Lauderdale, with easy access to several nearby beaches and the Deerfield International Fishing Pier. It's near a cosmopolitan city, yet a visit to the truly wild side of Florida, the Everglades National Park, is only 30 miles away. If you visit Deerfield Beach in mid-February, you can find yourself right in the middle of The 58th Annual Deerfield Beach Founder's Days Celebrations. The fun will carry on February 17-20, on the beach itself, sandwiched in between Ft. Lauderdale to the north and Boca Raton to the south. According to the city's parks and recreation department, well-behaved, leashed dogs are permitted at all events provided their guardians clean up after them. The theme of this year's event is "Once Upon A Time" and complimentary activities include arts and crafts, food vendors galore, entertainment, a parade and the 4th Annual Bed Race. Don't laugh. Cash prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and for the Best Dressed Bed! To participate in the parade or the bed race, check out Founder's Days or call 954-480-4433.
By Patricia Collier As a silent victim of divorce, Who Shelby became a 400 pound underweight registered quarter horse. At age 10, the mare was severely neglected and malnourished, as shown on the right. In pathetic condition, the horse was put up for sale at a trade show. It was a stroke of good fortune that Marjena Bass of Baldwin, Florida, attended that show and quickly gave Who Shelby a new home, one where she could heal and be restored to her original splendor. After more than a year with Marjena, Who Shelby sparkles, as seen in the photo below. Marjena even arranged for her to be returned to her original owner, who had been devastated to learn of the horse's fate. The people to whom she had sold her horse a few years prior had seemed so wonderful. But Who Shelby has come full circle and is loved once again and there's no better ending to a story, is there?
~ Happy 2nd Birthday Feb. 27 to
Riley ~ Like to attend events with your dog? Be extra careful when children approach you. Even though your canine is a model citizen, he/she may react defensively if a strange little person rushes him with a yell and a (hard) pat and may react to protect you. Check out the Petition to Allow Pets in Condos. Thousands of senior citizens in Florida have been denied the opportunity to improve their health and well-being with pet companionship in dwellings they own. Private home ownership should allow responsible persons to keep pets. For more information, go to Citizens for Pets in Condos. The petition is on that page, under "Sign Petition." Did you know? Key West recently made the "Top Ten Dog-Friendliest Cities in North America" list. Indeed, it's one of the few places where you can enjoy some tropical liquid refreshment or a pizza indoors with your pup at your side. And now, an important subliminal
