    Our Handsome Hound, Fred

The month of Cupid is the perfect time to reflect on the positive effects our pets have on us. Studies show having pets makes us more sociable, improves our memory, makes our heart stronger, improves our blood circulation, and slows the loss of our bone tissue. It may well be that pets are better than pills in helping us stay healthy - that's true love!

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

In this month's NewsPetter, we feature a furry Mardi, an island get-away, a photo defining comfort, a few pet-related tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win delicious doggie cookies in sand, sea and sun-inspired shapes from the new 7 Dogs Tropical Bakery, owned by none other than the canines at FloridaPets.net. Just check the end of the NewsPetter for all the poop on how to enter. And speaking of prizes, congratulations to Frances Wester of Orlando, the winner of last month's contest.

Special Note: If you cannot see the photographs in this NewsPetter, you are missing a lot of neat stuff! Some of our readers just can't get email in the HTML format that allows them to view pictures and other artwork, so we've come up with this solution:

    Pet-Friendly Activity
    Past Mardi Paws Queen Tiffany

    Party with the pups
    By Patricia Collier

Grab your Mardi Gras beads and join the City of Dunedin in celebrating the 5th Annual Mardi Party for Pups Festival Parade and Pet Talent Com"paw"tition, scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2006.

Four-legged friends and humans - with or without costumes - are invited to what will be a barking good time. Participants will gather in Pioneer Park at 8:30 a.m. and will proceed down Main Street to the Pinellas Trail beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Among the day's celebrities, you'll see the leader of the parade, Grand Marshal Willa, The Krewe of Orange and the Krewe of the Pink Flamingo. Before the parade, the King and Queen Drools-A-Lot will be chosen amidst fanfare, wagons decorated in purple, green and gold, mardi gras king cakes (doggie biscuits, of course!) and drawings and prizes galore.

To include your party hound in the day's events, there is a $10 fee and dogs must be registered in advance by calling Jan Sebald at 727-298-3213. All monies from the event will go towards the Humane Society of Pinellas - Hurricane Katrina Relief Animal fund.

    Pet-Friendly Get-Away
    Castaways Beach & Bay Cottages

    Tucked away bliss
    By Patricia Collier

Our pet-friendly vacation spot this month is Castaways Beach and Bay Cottages. Merriam-Webster Online defines a castaway as a survivor of a shipwreck, left without resources, but nothing could be further from the truth for the lucky people who wind up at this get-away, located where Sanibel and Captiva Islands meet and nestled in between the Gulf of Mexico and Sunset Bay.

Accommodations include waterfront cottages, efficiencies and motel units and, for us pet peeps, separate tiled rooms, a special area for dog walking and facilities for dog bathing. Dogs are permitted on the beaches of Sanibel Island if leashed, but not at all on Captiva Island. There's a $20 per night, per pet, fee.

This is a special area of Florida everyone should visit. These are world-famous shelling beaches and the sunsets are so beautiful, even the grumpiest member of the family will get a lump in their throat. A few days here and you'll want to stay a castaway forever.

    Diesel of Miami

The dog who found the good life

    Meet Diesel, companion to
    Wanda Roman of Miami, Florida.

Diesel, who is about 18-months-old, was rescued by Wanda's brother. He loves spending time at home. According to Wanda, Diesel is basking in his new lifestyle, "You can always find him lying down, stretched out on the couch, enjoying the air conditioner," she said.

Diesel also likes his doggie treats and chew toys. "Diesel is a spoiled puppy," Wanda said, "and he likes it that way."

    Tidbits, Tips & Tales

From Jo Ann Palmer of Michigan: "A word of caution to anyone traveling out of state with dogs that require special medication or food. Please check prices before you purchase and, if you can, bring the food or medication with you from home. And if time permits, price shop with different vets. Our Jack Russell needed special food (EN) and we ran out while on vacation here in Florida, but our vet assured us we would not have problems finding a place that carried it. We called and called and only found it in veterinarian offices and I never dreamed that there would be such a major difference in price from one vet to another!" Editor's Note: Jo Ann said they ended up overpaying compared to the prices in their hometown, but felt they had no choice.

How much is that doggie in the window? According to Jim Wilson, a veterinarian and a lawyer, the lifetime cost of having a 12-year-old small dog is only about $11,000. Where else can you get that kind of love and loyalty for under $1,000 a year?

Must be those big, brown eyes. According to Readers Digest, a majority of men and women questioned said their pets are more affectionate than their partners.

Time for the repetitive, subliminal message from FloridaPets.net:
"Doggie pooper scoopers, use them, always, everywhere you go. Good human."

Have a pet-related tidbit, tip or tale?
Send it to WebMistress and we'll share it with other readers of the NewsPetter.
