    Happy New Year, everyone!

Studies show people keep resolutions they make for their pets better than those they make for themselves. So, proclamations like, "I will take more walks with my dog," can turn out to be the kind of resolutions to which we're most apt to be faithful six months from now.

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

As you might expect, people write me with all kinds of questions. Just for fun, I kept track of the queries from last year and found the most-asked question was where to find low cost spaying and neutering services in Florida. That's terrific because that means more and more people are wanting to do their part to help curb the animal-overpopulation problem. Here's our list of low-cost spaying and neutering programs. If you know of others, we'd love to hear from you.

In this month's NewsPetter, we feature an event to rid the world of couch potatoes, a secret get-away, a photo of a monster's namesake, a few pet-related tips and of course, FloridaPets.net's contest! This month you could win delicious doggie cookies in sand, sea and sun-inspired shapes from the new 7 Dogs Tropical Bakery, owned by none other than the canines at FloridaPets.net. Just check the end of the NewsPetter for all the poop on how to enter. And speaking of prizes, congratulations to Christie Hyde of Daytona Beach, the winner of last month's contest.

    Walk this way
    By Patricia Collier

Dust off your tennies and shoo Rover off the bed. It's time for Walk for the Animals, the annual fundraiser for the Humane Society of Lee County (HSLC).

The event will take place Saturday, January 21, at the Lee County Sports Complex, located at 14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway in Ft. Myers.

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the Walk starts at 10:00 a.m. They'll be more contests after the Walk and prizes will be awarded at 11:00 a.m. You can walk with or without your dog while raising money for the homeless pets left to the care of the HSLC. If you don't have a dog, you can rent a well-behaved one for no charge at the event - if you raise $100 previous to the start of the Walk. For more info about the day's activities, or to register online for the Walk, go here.

    Casa Thorn's Secret Garden Room

    Lost in Paradise
    By Patricia Collier

What may be only a dream for some people or background props on a reality television show for others can be an actual vacation for you, right here in the sunshine state.

Casa Thorn Bed & Breakfast is one of the most secluded lodging accommodations I've seen in the U.S. Almost secretly-positioned on Plantation Key, one of Islamorada's "Village of Islands" in the Florida Keys, Casa Thorn is replete with privacy. As is common in tropical settings, guests rooms have special names and the one I want to live in for the next five years is the Secret Garden Room, shown above. This is where I'll enjoy my own private courtyard, my own walled-in garden with my own entrance to the pool, my own shower which opens to my own garden and more little details that simply give me chills. This is where I'll write the Great Novel and grow my hair to my perfectly-tanned ankles while eating fruit and honey every day.

Once I've soaked up enough of my own little world, I can venture out to enjoy some of the most magnificent scenery in the world and enough activities and events to satisfy any preference. The Islamorada Chamber of Commerce offers a terrific Web site which details all the ways to enjoy this lovely area.

Casa Thorn is pet-friendly, making it a total heaven on earth. Small dogs, cats and birds are permitted, but you'll need to outline the particulars when making your reservation.

    Frankenstein

    Not so scary

    Meet Frankenstein, companion to
Thomas and Samantha Toole of Windermere, Florida.

This precious boy is a 9-month-old Papillon. Frankenstein weighs a little over three pounds and, according to Samantha, he's no little monster, rather a bundle of joy for his parents.

    Tidbits, Tips & Tales

Can you hear me now? A recent American Animal Hospital Association poll showed that 33 percent of dog guardians admit they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave messages for them on an answering machine while away.

Ever lost a dog to cancer? It's time for some good news. Patricia Olson, the President and Chief Executive of the US headquartered Morris Animal Foundation, one of the foremost animal health research institutes in the world recently commented, "With the recent sequencing of the canine genome and the launching of new initiatives targeting this devastating disease, curing canine cancer is no longer a distant dream ... but a quickly approaching reality!" For further information, visit Pet Screen.

Update on Pet Food Recall: Please read Morris Animal Foundation, even if you know what brand food you feed your dog

Time for the repetitive, subliminal message from FloridaPets.net:
"Doggie pooper scoopers, use them, always, everywhere you go. Good human."
