Dear Patricia,

If you have trouble viewing emails with images, please read the January NewsPetter here.

In case you didn't know, we've been online since October of 2003. You might think we'd be tired by now, but no way! We love animals and people and we've got some really cool plans for FloridaPets.net for 2010. We're looking forward to having everyone 'tail along" with us for those changes and hope everyone's new year will be filled with love and laughter and companion animals galore!

WHAT'S NEW?

Buddy is the beautiful Rottweiler pal of Ginny, one of our readers, who answered last month's question about favorite pet toys. Buddy's favorite is his Piggy, with which he is shown above enjoying a special moment. "He doesn't destroy his toys," Ginny explained, "but because of the frequency with which he plays with it, the pig has been sewn many times and it was with some regret we had to say goodbye to piggy just last week."

Leesburg Dog Park - we don't think it's new, but we just found out about it from a kind reader who says the park is well done, with shaded areas and a water fountain for dogs, as well as a shower for paws. The park is located at the corner of Silver Lake Road and College Drive, right across from Lake/Sumter Community College.

The Education Team of the SPCA of Central Florida will hold a Pit Bull class in both English and Spanish. The classes will be held this month and next, room is limited, so better register now. Go here for more info.

The Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for Pucks n' Paws Thursday, January 14, when they play the Florida Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Fans are asked to bring a medium-sized bag of dry dog or cat food to the Humane Society table on the West Plaza of the St. Pete Times Forum from 5-7:45 p.m. to receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a special prize. For more info, visit Tampa Bay Lightning.

Unfortunately, horses are victims of abuse, neglect and starvation, just like dogs and cats. If you'd like to help a group working hard to help horses in need, go to Horse Protection Association of Florida.

Something to watch as possible trend: The Vermont Supreme Court will soon be deciding "what a dog's love is worth." For more info on this, go here.

Advocacy Alert: Does your local humane society or other area pet group have a free food program for needy people and their pets? If not, perhaps you could help start one in 2010. If you'd like more info about this, contact me. .

Last month's "What's Your Opinion" question was, "What's your pet's favorite toy?" According to FloridaPets.net readers, the Kong reigns supreme. Very sturdy and the hidden treats are always a hit. (We'll be back next month with a new question.)

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter where we're always dishing out pet friendly "Tweets."

That's it for this month. Thanks for continuing to "tail along" with FloridaPets.net. Please drop us a note anytime you have a comment or suggestion, questions, or would like us to feature your pet or a pet friendly event in your area.
