Melbourne Beach

Note: Dogs are not permitted on area beaches. As reflected by comments we receive from readers and from editorials we read in area media outlets, there is little to zero tolerance for dogs on public beaches in Brevard County, so beware.

1. Sebastian Inlet State Park

Located at 9700 South A1A, Melbourne Beach. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dogs are not allowed on the beach in this park, but are allowed on the trails if leashed.

2. South Beach Community Park dog park

Located on Mullet Creek Road. Directions: From US-192 (Melbourne Causeway), go south on Miramir Avenue/SR-A1A 1.0 miles and the road becomes Oak Street/SR-A1A, continue 10.9 miles.

Note of 08-13-06: One of our readers tell us this park is still on the drawing table; it's been approved but there's no money to build it. Our reader says people interested in getting this dog park built should contact Brevard County Commissioners and ask them to include funding for all the proposed dog parks in the 2006 referendum, or else it could be a long time before they are built.

Wickham Park Dog Park

Several canine characters having fun at the Wickham Park Dog Park

Located in Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Drive. This is the second off leash dog park in Brevard County; the other one is in Satellite Beach.

When you enter Wickham Park, turn to the right and follow the road around. The dog park is located on the right side of the road. Open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Offers a large (more than 25 pounds) and a small dog area, bags for clean up, benches and a water tap. Dogs must have a current rabies vaccine, animal license tag and wear a collar with ID.

Note of 04-13-08: An out of state visitor shares the above photo and comments following a recent visit:

"This was a very nice and large facility. No attendants when I showed up, but the website prepared me with dog tags. There were 20 other users and they were all very friendly and helpful as this was literally my first ever visit to any dog park. My female shepard/ huskey is very well behaved with all other dogs so we really enjoyed the facilities."

Note of 02-08-08: One of our readers tell us there will no longer be any fees or attedants at this dog park.

Note of 05-11-07: One of our readers visited this park recently and said she, "attempted to visit 4/29/2007, but it wasn't enough to have a rabies tag from nearby county. They required vet shot records plus a $2 fee. They were kind, but that was a current tag which should have been enough with a healthy dog."

Note of 02-14-07: According to a reader, proof of rabies at this park is a must and there is a $2/day entry fee. They said the park is, "very well maintained and operated; a first class facility."

Note of 07-28-06: According to park organizers, visitors must now start showing their dog's immunization records to the attendant. They also said fees will begin August 1, although the same thing was reported in 2005.

Note of 01-10-06: One of our kind readers visited this park recently and has provided the following feedback:

"Very user friendly. Was asked by an attendant to register upon entry - no need for paperwork - just verified dog had a current rabies tag from another county and what the tag number was. Brief discourse then on rules - which were the common sense stuff we all sort of expect (pick up after your dog, behavior, etc.). All in all, a good experience. A large area and a really good exercise opportunity for the dogs."

Note of 12-07-05: According to a news report, there will now be an entry fee for this park of $2 for up to two people with two dogs, $3 for up to three dogs, or $100 a year per individual and $200 a year for families. The county said the fee is necessary after some dog-on-dog and dog-on-person attacks prompted the need for an on-site attendant during park hours. However, we had been told earlier this year this park had an attendant - see next note.

Note of 06-22-05: One of our readers tells us there is now an attendant at this dog park and you must register your dog before entering.

Note of 07-03-04: Our research tells us admission to this park is free, but there is a two-dog-per-person limit per visit.

Note of 07-03-05: We have learned there are at least three more dog parks being planned for Brevard County. We'll do our best to keep you informed about them.

NOTE: We can't visit every area on a regular basis, so if you have information about any dog parks or beaches, or any other animal recreation facilities, in the Melbourne area, please contact FloridaPets.net.
