First Canine Insulin Receives FDA Approval
By Patricia Collier
If your dog has been diagnosed with diabetes, help is on the way. According to dvm.com, the online newsmagazine of veterinary medicine, the insulin will be called, "Vetsulin" and will be available later this summer.
Intervet, the manufacturer of Vetsulin, said the product has been approved in 20 countries, including the UK. The U.S. formal launch will coincide with the American Veterinary Medical Association meeting July in Philadelphia.
Symptoms of canine diabetes are similar to those in humans and include excessive thirst and urination and weight loss despite an increase in appetite.
According to the FDA, veterinarians will determine initial dosage requirements based on the animals' weight. After a series of tests, the vet will then determine a proper maintenance dosage. After that, pet guardians will be able to give the insulin at home.
The drug is administered by injection.
Intervet cautions against using Vetsulin for dogs known to be allergic to pork or pork products. To read about possible adverse reactions with Vetsulin, go to Pets With Diabetes.
