Note of 08-21-06:

Dogs are not permitted on Boca Raton area beaches. The fine for doing so is $83.

Happy update of 04-14-08: This is news you'll love, area dog lovers! Dr. John Pacy, a veterinarian in Palm Beach County has formed a group called Beaches Are for K9s Too, Inc. (BARK) to act as a political action committee. This committee will work to amend the current ban on dogs on the beach and establish a few dog friendly beaches in Palm Beach County where taxpayers/dog lovers can take their dogs for recreation. A petition drive is currently underway to get the issue before the county commission and on to the November 8 ballot for a possible referendum vote, if necessary. YOU CAN HELP. Go to BARK and print out and sign the petition. Please see the Web site for more info on how you can help collect signatures or make donations to the group.

Hopeful note of 06-05-06:

Some of our readers say this issue is not dead. Interestingly enough, after banning dogs from this area of the beach, commissioners said they might find an alternative beach for dogs, with both Ocean Hammock and Gulfstream Park being mentioned in news reports as possibilities. But, as far as we know, no action has been taken on this matter and there is still no place for local residents and visitors to take their dogs for companionship and exercise. Dog guardians may wish to unite and readdress the Palm Beach County Commission about this ASAP.

Sad state of affairs as of 06-01-06: Formerly, an area on the beach off A1A in this area, called Dog Beach, was open to dogs, but in early 2004 the Palm Beach County Commission voted to ban dogs at that location. Readers have been encouraged to go to Juno Beach where dogs are welcome and which has convenient parking and poop scoop bags.

NOTE: We can't visit every area on a regular basis, so if you have information about any dog parks or beaches, or any other animal recreation facilities, in the Boynton Beach area, please contact FloridaPets.net.
